An embolus, is described as a free-floating mass, located inside blood vessels that can travel from one site in the blood stream to another. An embolus can be made up of solid (like a blood clot), liquid (like amniotic fluid), or gas (like air). Once these masses get "stuck" in a different blood vessel, it is then known as an "embolism." An embolism can cause ischemia—damage to an organ from lack of oxygen.[1] A paradoxical embolism is a specific type of embolism in which the embolus travels from the right side of the heart (venous circulation) to the left side of the heart (arterial circulation) and lodges itself in a blood vessel known as an artery.[2] Thus, it is termed "paradoxical" because the embolus lands in an artery, rather than a vein.

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a blockage of an artery in the lungs by a substance that has moved from elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream (embolism). Symptoms...
embolus may pass into the arterial system. Such an event is termed a paradoxicalembolism. When this affects the blood vessels of the brain it can cause stroke...
comprises the following conditions: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) BD71, pulmonary embolism (PE) BB00. VTE is a common cardiovascular disorder with significant morbidity...
Cholesterol embolism occurs when cholesterol is released, usually from an atherosclerotic plaque, and travels as an embolus in the bloodstream to lodge...
occluding the dense capillary network of the lungs This is a pulmonary embolism which can be life-threatening. Thrombophlebitis causes include disorders...
it can be complicated by deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and even pulmonary embolism (PE) Migratory superficial thrombophlebitis is known as Trousseau's syndrome...
intravenous therapy (for air embolism) Bone fracture (for fat embolism) A septal defect of the heart makes it possible for paradoxical embolization, which happens...

The mechanism by which a PFO may play a role in stroke is called paradoxicalembolism. In the case of PFO, a blood clot from the venous circulatory system...
