This article is about the city in Iran. For the twin town across the border in Turkmenistan, see Sarahs. For the administrative divisions of Razavi Khorasan province, see Sarakhs County and Sarakhs Rural District.
Sarakhs (Persian: سرخس)[a] is a city in the Central District of Sarakhs County, Razavi Khorasan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[4][5] Sarakhs was once a stopping point along the Silk Road, and in its 11th century heyday had many libraries.[5] Much of the original city site is now just across the border at Serakhs in Turkmenistan.
At the 2006 census, its population was 33,571 in 8,066 households.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 37,162 people in 9,984 households.[7] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 42,179 people in 11,812 households.[2]
