Samuel Hall Lord information

Sam Lord's Castle in 1949.

Samuel Hall Lord (1778 – 5 November 1844), also known as Sam Lord, was one of the most famous buccaneers on the island of Barbados. Lord amassed great wealth for his castle-mansion in Barbados. He did this through the direct plundering of ships stranded in the coral reefs just off the coast of his estate (UN/LOCODE: BB SLC). According to legend, Sam Lord would hang lanterns high in the coconut trees around his estate. Passing ships far out at sea would think it was the port city of Bridgetown and would sail towards the reef in the area, leading them to wreck their ships. Sam Lord would then board the ships and keep the riches for his castle, which stood in the parish of Saint Philip.[1]

  1. ^ PJT (24 December 2010). "Sam Lord's can be saved". The Barbados Advocate. Archived from the original on 26 March 2012. Retrieved 29 December 2010. The castle was built by Samuel Hall Lord (1778–1844), one of the most famous buccaneers in Barbados at the time. It is said that he acquired the wealth for his mansion by directly pillaging ships that were left in the lurch in the coral reefs just off the coast of his castle. The 72-acre, 248-room property was eventually turned into one of Barbados's most famous hotels, where distinguished persons from British royalty such as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to international superstars spent time there [sic] over the years. It was even used as a location for the filming 15 episodes of the American soap opera, The Bold and the Beautiful.
