Paraty has become a tourist destination, known for its historic town center and the coast and mountains in the region. The historic center of the city, as well as four areas of the Atlantic Forest, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019 under the title "Paraty and Ilha Grande".[5]
Its Municipal Human Development Index (MHDI) is 0.693, according to 2010 data from the United Nations Development Program – UNDP (published in 2013), which is considered "medium".
Its district headquarters is located at sea level, on land located between the Perequê Açu and Mateus Nunes rivers, and was designed taking into account the flow of the tides. As a result, many of the streets of Paraty's historic colonial core are periodically flooded by the sea.
On 5 July 2019, a portion of the territory in which the colonial historic core of Paraty and Ilha Grande, in Angra dos Reis, are located, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, for its exceptional integration between values associated with cultural and natural heritage; constituting the first mixed site in Brazil.[5]
