The Mass for Four Voices is a choral Mass setting by the English composer William Byrd (c.1540–1623). It was written around 1592–1593 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, and is one of three settings of the Mass Ordinary which he published in London in the early 1590s.[1]
It consists of the text of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus & Benedictus, Agnus Dei) set for a four-part choir. The work is a noted example of English Renaissance music from the Tudor period.
^For more detailed accounts of Byrd's Mass settings see J. Kerman, The Masses and Motets of William Byrd (London etc., 1981 pp. 183–215 and J. Harley, William Byrd, Gentleman of the Chapel Royal (Aldershot, 1997) pp 307–317. The most authoritative modern edition is P. Brett (ed.) The Byrd Edition Vol. 4: The Masses (London, 1981). Several editions are also available online. A facsimile edition of the three Masses, edited by John Milsom and with introduction and select bibliography by Kerry McCarthy, is published by DIAMM.
