Hovel in the Hills: An Account of the Simple Life is the first book in a three-book non-fiction series by British writer Elizabeth West (Elizabeth "Betty" Prewett West)[1][2] recording her and her partner’s experiences as part of the back-to-the-land movement in the United Kingdom in the mid-20th century. Hovel in the Hills was originally published by Faber and Faber in London in 1977.[3]

Rose's grandfather, Ernest Henry Prewett (1901-1999) started work for the Great Western Railway at the age of 15. His memories were later recorded by his daughter Betty, who as Elizabeth West published a number of successful books of which the best known is probably 'Hovel in the Hills', her amusing account of attempting to live the simple life in deepest rural Wales.
