Capital punishment in Uruguay information

This picture shows the time of execution of criminals Facundo Luna and Carlos Bejarano in the Preventive Jail, Correctional and Penitentiary Prison of Montevideo in 1892, later called the Prison of Miguelete. The executions were performed in the presence of public in attendance and inmates in the prison yard. On the wall, a quote attributed to Plato can be seen: "The most unfortunate of all men is he who cannot bear misfortunes".

Capital punishment in Uruguay was abolished from the legal system in 1907 by Law N° 3238, passed during the government of president Claudio Williman, and later removed from the constitutional system in 1918. The death penalty had been expressly established by Uruguayan Constitution of 1830.
