In 2015 Spain produced 2.7 million cars which made it the 8th largest automobile producer country in the world and the 2nd largest car manufacturer in Europe after Germany[1] a position in the ranking that it was still keeping in 2024.[2] Approximately 80% of that production is for export.[1] During the first half of 2016, with exports valued over 24 billion euros over that period, the automotive industry accounted for 18.9% of the total Spanish exports.[3]

In 2016, the automotive industry was generating 8.7 percent of Spain's gross domestic product, employing about nine percent of workers in the manufacturing industry.[1]

In all, there are 13 car factories located in Spain.[4] which are supported by a thriving local car components industry,[1] including rapidly growing Spanish multinationals such as Gestamp Automoción and Grupo Antolin. More than two million car engines are manufactured in Spain every year.[5] The main manufacturers established in the country are Mercedes-Benz Group AG (manufacturing plant in Vitoria), Ford (its plant located in Almussafes is Ford's biggest in Europe),[1] Stellantis (at Villaverde in Madrid, Figueruelas and Vigo), Renault (with plants in Palencia and Valladolid as well as a transmission plant in Seville), SEAT (Martorell), Volkswagen (Pamplona).
