Agkistrodon is a genus of venomous pit vipers commonly known as American moccasins.[2][3] The genus is endemic to North America, ranging from the Southern United States to northern Costa Rica.[1] Eight species are currently recognized,[4][5] all of them monotypic and closely related.[6] Common names include: cottonmouths, copperheads, and cantils.[7]
