The 1910 Melbourne Cup was a two-mile handicap horse race which took place on Tuesday, 1 November 1910.[1]
This was the 50th edition of the race, which featured the only silver cup ever presented and it now sits in the National Sports Museum. The race was won by Comedy King, he and his mother Tragedy Queen were imported to Australia by Sol Green in 1908. Comedy King was sired by Persimmon, the Epsom Derby winner who was owned by King Edward VII. Comedy King who did not race as a two-year-old won Futurity Stakes as its second start, before being aimed at 1910 Melbourne Cup. He won the Spring Stakes at Randwick on October 1st as its last start before the 1910 race starting at 10/1. He defeated Trafalgar, who won 23 races in Australia but never beat Comedy King in eight attempts. For the second consecutive year, the winning jockey was William McLachlan, who won the 1909 race aboard Prince Foote. Comedy King would go on to sire 1919 Melbourne Cup winner Artillerymen and 1922 Melbourne Cup winner King Ingoda and Shadown King who was placed four times in the race from 1930-1933.[2]
