The Vilcek Foundation is an organization that intends to raise awareness of immigrant contributions to the United States and foster appreciation of the arts and sciences.[2] The foundation's flagship programs include the Vilcek Foundation Prizes, which recognize and support immigrant contributions to American arts, biomedical science, and society. The foundation is also the designated steward of the art collection assembled by founders Jan and Marica Vilcek, comprising holdings in American modernism, Native American pottery, pre-Columbian objects, and contemporary art.[3]
The Foundation was established in 2000 by Jan and Marica Vilcek, immigrants from the former Czechoslovakia.[4] The mission of the Foundation was inspired by the couple's respective careers in biomedical science and art history, as well as their personal experiences and appreciation for the opportunities offered to them as newcomers to the United States.[5]
When the Vilceks first established the foundation in 2000, nonprofit executive Rick Kinsel was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees, a role he officially took on in 2003 as executive director. In 2016 he was appointed president of the foundation;[6] As such, he leads and oversees all aspects of the foundation’s operations and programs and the organization’s institutional and creative partnerships. [7]
The Vilcek Foundation's operations and programs are managed by a full-time staff and a Board of Directors, with support from consultants.[8] The Board of Directors is composed of co-founders Jan and Marica Vilcek,[9][10] President Rick Kinsel,[11] Joan Massagué,[12][13] K. Heran Darwin,[14] Jung Lee Sanders,[15] and Christina Mossaides Strassfield.[16]
