"Vellapokkathil" (Malayalam: വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കത്തിൽ, English: In the Flood) is a short story written by Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai. The story was published in 1935 and is based on the author's childhood experience during the Great Flood of 1924 in Kerala.[1] Widely considered one of Thakazhi's best stories,[2] it follows the plight of a man named Chennan and his family, as they are trapped in their home during a severe flood. They are eventually rescued by a passing boat, but their dog is left behind and is forced to survive on its own.[3]
