The UNESCO 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property is an international treaty to combat the illegal trade in cultural items.[2] It was signed on 14 November 1970 and came into effect on 24 April 1972. As of February 2024[update], 143 states have ratified the convention.[3]
