The Anorak in popular culture
A trainspotter in the United Kingdom, also known as a locospotter or gricer, is a someone who enjoys looking for and possibly documenting the type and identification number of trains that pass by, particularly their engines. The practice was popularised in the 1940s. Overzealous aficionados proved problematic and caused difficulties in the post-WII era. Following this, and the decline of steam locomotives, numbers fell off and the hobby saw significant eclipse. It remains an interest of a small minority of its original numbers in the 2000s.
