Sinking of the Oscar information

The wreck of the Oscar
Date1 April 1813
Locationby Girdleness, Aberdeen
Outcomeloss of over 40 lives, ship lost, community in mourning, and eventual building of Girdleness Lighthouse
Deathsall crew, apart from two survivors

The Oscar was a whaling ship that was wrecked near Aberdeen, Scotland, on 1 April 1813. It was so close to the shore that families helplessly watched the ship's men struggle and (all but two) drown, a few yards from safety. This disaster led to community funding for the bereaved families and is known in poem and art. It resulted in changes to bring safety in a new lighthouse for the headland, and a street in Torry (above the wreck scene at Greyhope Bay) was named Oscar Road.[1]
