For Sydney's climate in general, see Climate of Sydney.
Severe weather events or extreme weather events in Sydney, Australia, include hailstorms, thunderstorms, gale, bushfires, heatwaves, drought, and flash flooding from heavy rain (caused by East coast lows or black nor'easters). Sydney is rarely affected by cyclones, although remnants of cyclones do affect the city.[1]
According to CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology, global warming has increased the chances of extreme rain and flash floods recently.[2][3] However, destructive heavy rainfall events have occurred in Australia, including the Sydney area, since records began in the 18th century.[4][5]
Annually, coastal Sydney sees five heat-related deaths per 100,000 people while the western suburbs see 14 per 100,000.[6] Heat-related deaths in the city were common in the late 19th and early 20th century period where several individual cases were reported.[7][8][9][10]
