Peter Hujar (/ˈhuːdʒɑːr/;[1] October 11, 1934 – November 26, 1987) was an American photographer best known for his black-and-white portraits.[2][3][4][5] Hujar's work received only marginal public recognition during his lifetime,[5] but he has since been recognized as a major American photographer of the late 20th century.[2][3]
