National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) (Urdu: قومی کمیشن برائے وقار نسواں) is a Pakistani statutory body established by the President Pervez Musharraf, under the XXVI Ordinance dated 17 July 2000.[1] It is an outcome of the national and international commitments of the Government of Pakistan like Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 1995;[2] and 1998 National Plan of Action (NPA) for Women, 1998.[3]
The main objective of the Commission is the emancipation of women, equalization of opportunities and socio-economic conditions amongst women and men, and elimination of all sorts of discrimination against women.
^The original National Commission was established during the regime of late Gen Zia ul Haq. This 16-member Pakistan National Commission on the Status of Women was set up on 9th of July 1983 via Government of Pakistan Gazette Notification and was headed by Begum Zari Sarfaraz and published the famous 'Report on the Status of Women in Pakistan' in 1985, making strong recommendations against the Hadood Islamic laws earlier promulgated by Gen Zia's regime. The members of the original Commission were: Begum Zari Sarfaraz, Chair; Begum Mahmooda Salim Khan, NWFP; Mrs DJ Kaikobad, Baluchistan; Begum Saeeda Qazi Isa, Baluchistan; Mrs. Mumtaz Rashidi, Sindh; Khanum Gohar Aijaz, Sindh; Prof. Amina Khamsani, Sindh; Begum Anwar G. Ahmed, Sindh; Dr Miss Riffat Rashid, Punjab; Begum Mumtaz U. Karamat, Punjab; Mrs. (Apa) Nisar Fatima, Punjab; Mrs Anis Mirza, Federal Area/ICT; Begum Razia Azizuddin, Nominee of the Majlis e Shoora; Mr Khalid Ishaque, male member; Prof Karrar Hussain, male member; and Dr Z.A. Hashmi, male member. Several federal secretaries were also ex-officio members.
