Nagpur Metro is a rapid transit system for the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.[6][7] Phase I of the metro project cost was estimated to cost ₹8,650 crore (equivalent to ₹140 billion or US$1.7 billion in 2023)[8] but the final project cost incurred was ₹9,279 crore (US$1.2 billion).[9] In February 2014, the Government of Maharashtra gave approval for the Metro project,[10] while the Government of India's Ministry of Urban Development had given "In Principle" approval for the project.[11] On 20 August 2014, Union Cabinet gave approval for the development of the project, and the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone on 21 August.[8] Construction began on 31 May 2015,[12] with trial run beginning on 30 September 2017.
The prime minister inaugurated operations on Nagpur Metro on 8 March 2019[13] via video conferencing along with Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis and Union Cabinet Minister Nitin Gadkari.[2][14]
Nagpur Metro became the 13th Metro system in India to be operational.[15] It is also being touted as the greenest metro rail in India.[13]
On 21 August 2021, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated a 1.6 km (0.99 mi) expansion between Sitabuldi and Kasturchand Park. This featured the Zero Mile Freedom Park station which has a 60,000-sq ft park and a 20-storey building, designed by a French architect.[16]
On 11 December 2022 Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated phase 1 of Nagpur Metro completely and laid foundation stone of phase 2 of Nagpur Metro.[17]
Currently, the Phase II work has also been started.[18]
