The Macchina of Santa Rosa is a 30-metre-high (98 ft) machine built to honor Saint Rose of Viterbo, the patron saint of Viterbo, Italy. Every year on the evening of 3 September a hundred men called "Facchini di Santa Rosa" (Saint Rose's porters) hoist the machine –weighing about 11,000 pounds (5,000 kg)– and carry it through the streets and squares of Viterbo's medieval town centre. The whole route is slightly longer than 1 km (0.62 mi). The machine is rebuilt anew about every five years.
The machine's procession is a significant event in Viterbo, attracting thousands of spectators, and is included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.[1]
