Retaliation for the murder of Martha Thomas
On June 12, 1887, Peter Betters was brutally lynched by a small mob in Jamestown, Ohio following the brutal murder of Martha Thomas. [1] Because Thomas was a well-respected member of the Jamestown community among both White and Black circles, and because the murder had been so gruesome, a mixed crowd of Black and White citizens was spurred to seek revenge for her injuries by lynching Peter Betters.
