Sebastián Lelio was the first Chilean director to win the award, for A Fantastic Woman.
Chile has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film[nb 1] since 1990. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue.[3]
Chile has submitted twenty-six films for Oscar consideration, with their first film being nominated for an Academy Award in 2013. Chile won its first Foreign Language Oscar in 2018, with A Fantastic Woman.[4]
