John Garland James (born December 1, 1844, Palmyra, Fluvanna County, Virginia) was a distinguished educator and a pivotal figure in the development of Texas higher education. He served as the 2nd President of Texas A&M College (Texas A&M University). He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1867. In 1865 while at VMI, he was the first initiate and a charter member of the Alpha Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
