Israel Alter (also: Yisraʾel Alter,[1] born September 23, 1901[2] in Lemberg, died November 16, 1979, in New York City) was an Austrian-Hungarian[3] Jewish cantor[1] and last chief cantor in Hanover, Germany.[4] The well traveled composer was regarded as "the one Chasanim, the cantor of the cantors".[5]
