Bahir Dar is the capital city of the Amhara Region in Ethiopia.
Bahir Dar is a popular tourist destination, with a variety of attractions including the nearby Lake Tana and Blue Nile River. The city is distinctly known for its 'wide avenues lined with palm trees and a variety of colourful flowers.'[citation needed]
The city was established around the thirteenth century following the building of Kidanemariam church at the present sites of St. George church. The city earned the name Bahir Dar, meaning "near the sea", during the reign of Emperor Yikuno Amlak. [1]
