Esfarayen (Persian: اسفراین)[a] is a city in the Central District of Esfarayen County, North Khorasan province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[4]
At the 2006 census, its population was 51,321 in 13,376 households.[5] The following census in 2011 counted 60,372 people in 17,049 households.[6] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 59,490 people in 17,466 households.[2]
The majority of the population is Kurdish,[7] with a significant population of Tats[8][9] and Khorasani Turks.[7]
