Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park, often referred to as Scripps Park, is an urban park located in La Jolla within the city of San Diego, California. The 5.6 acres (2.3 ha) park, part of the unceded ancient homeland and traditional territory of the Kumeyaay Nation, is sited on a sandstone bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is an open-space, landscaped environment heavily used by residents and visitors from all over the world.
The park has approximately 1,500 ft (460 m) of shoreline and includes La Jolla Cove Beach, Point La Jolla, Boomer Beach, and Shell Beach. The La Jolla Adult Recreation Center, three historic belvederes, and a 2022 comfort station are the only buildings in the park.
Influenced by the American picturesque park movement, Scripps Memorial Park has a 3.8-acre lawn and heritage plantings that include groves of gnarly trunked pink melaleuca (Melaleuca nesophila), an Australian native plant; exotic dragon trees (Dracaena draco) from the Canary Islands; several Monterey cypress (Hesperocyparis macrocarpa); and a row of Mexican fan palms (Washingtonia robusta).[1]
According to the Automobile Association of America (AAA), Scripps Memorial Park is the most photographed spot in San Diego.[2]
The La Jolla Park Coastal Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 9, 2024, includes Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Park as a contributing resource.[3][4]
