A dormitory (originated from the Latin word dormitorium,[1] often abbreviated to dorm), also known as a hall of residence or a residence hall (often abbreviated to halls), is a building primarily providing sleeping and residential quarters for large numbers of people such as boarding school, high school, college or university students. In some countries, it can also refer to a room containing several beds accommodating people.
^"Dormitory, n. and adj., originally a sleeping chamber, especially a room containing many beds where monks, teachers and students sleep (1485), in American usage a residence hall at a university or college (1865).
