The Delta Police Department (DPD) is the police force for the City of Delta, British Columbia, a suburban community in Metro Vancouver with a population of 102,661. As of 2019, the Delta Police Department has an authorized strength of 194 sworn members and 72 civilian support staff, and an operating budget of $35,981,000.[5]
In 2007, the DPD became responsible for policing the Tsawwassen First Nation through an agreement between the nation and the provincial and federal government.[6] Under the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement Act, the First Nation does not have the power to establish a police force on their own, but are able to do so by requesting the minister of public safety and solicitor general. The nation chose to employ the DPD to enforce its laws.[7][citation needed]
In 2020, the DPD was recognized as one of BC's top employers.[8]
Delta is one of the safest cities in the Metro Vancouver area, according to Statistics Canada Data [9][10]
The crime severity index in Delta is just under 53 index points, as per the latest statistics from 2018. It continues to be significantly lower than Metro Vancouver (75.6), B.C. (88.3) and Canada (75). The crime severity index not only measures the amount of crime, but also the seriousness of each offense.
The crime severity index in Delta has been declining steadily since 2014, according to Statistics Canada.[11]
Property crime in Delta trended downward in 2019, a decline of two per cent overall. Residential break and enter was down 20 per cent compared to the three-year average and theft from vehicles was down 15 per cent. The only real outlier was theft over/under $5,000, which was up 14 per cent compared to the three-year average.[12]
