King Fahd died on the morning of 1 August 2005, at the age of 84,[a] in the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh. The announcement was made by the Minister of Information, Iyad bin Amin Madani. His funeral was held the next day. Crown Prince Abdullah was immediately pledged allegiance as the new king of the country. At the same time, Prince Sultan, Minister of Defense, was chosen to be the new crown prince. Flags of many Arab countries were flown at half-mast as an expression of respect.
It was further disclosed that the emergency Arab League summit, which was originally planned to take place in Sharm El-Sheikh, has been delayed with no rescheduled date confirmed.[2]
