Dougherty was the head coach of the Army Black Knights men's basketball team for four seasons from 1971 to 1975.[1] His tenure at Army was succeeded and preceded by Basketball Hall of Famers Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski.[2] He was an assistant coach with Villanova prior to coaching the Black Knights.[3]
Dougherty was also a high school basketball coach for Malvern Preparatory School and Episcopal Academy.[4][5] He retired from coaching in 2010.[6]
Dougherty died at the age of 87 in 2022.[7]
