The Coatzacoalcos Underwater Tunnel is a tunnel under the Coatzacoalcos River, connecting the cities of Coatzacoalcos and Villa de Allende in the Mexican state of Veracruz. The tunnel was formally opened on April 27, 2017, making it the first undersea tunnel in Mexico.[1] after a 13-year construction process characterized by delays and increased costs and for which it has been described as a "monument to corruption".[2][3] It is operated by a subsidiary of IDEAL, a company controlled by Carlos Slim.
