Carpentier is a Norman-Picard surname,[1] variant form of French Charpentier[2] and is similar to the English Carpenter, that is borrowed from Norman. In Basse Normandie, the most common form is Lecarpentier.[3]
The words carpentier, charpentier, carpenter are ultimately from Late Latin; carpentarius "artifex" or "wainwright", equivalent to Latin carpent(um) "two wheeled carriage" ( < Celtic (Gaulish) **carbanton; cf. OIr carpad "chariot") + suffix -arius - ARY; see ER2.[4]
