Book of Deggua information


The Book of Deggua (Ge'ez: መፅሃፈ ድጓ, De'guaa, means "lamentation") is a hymnary guideline of the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Churches written by the 6th-century composer Yared. The great Deggua is called Mahlete Yared (treasury).

Yared prepared Deggua in three modes of chanting used by the church that is known as Ge'ez, Ezil and Araray, represent the Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, respectively. Ge'ez means the plain chant for ordinary days, Ezil means measured for funerals and Araray means lighter, free mode for great festivals.[1]

The book contains many passages of the Creation, patristic works, hagiographies, homilies, etc.
