The Battle of Metaxades was a part of the Greek Civil War and took place in the village of Metaxades, Evros from 15 to 20 May 1949, between the Greek Army and the Democratic Army of Greece in the area between the two hills of the village. This battle was the last attempt of the Democratic Army to operate outside the fortified groups in Grammos and Vitsi. It was the biggest and bloodiest battle in the prefecture of Evros.[2][3][4][5][6]
^According to Captain Kritonas (Vangelis Kasapis), out of a total of 1378 guerrillas and executives, they barely escaped 420-450. Everyone else fell dead, wounded, captive, missing.
