Born in Jericho, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), Jones moved to Melbourne and then to New South Wales to manage a station near Wagga Wagga. Jones and Thomas Darlow established the Wagga Wagga Advertiser (now the Daily Advertiser) in 1868.
