This article is about the M5.8 earthquake. For the earthquake swarms of which this was the largest earthquake, see Oklahoma earthquake swarms (2009–present).
The 2016 Oklahoma earthquake occurred on September 3, 2016 near Pawnee, Oklahoma. Measuring 5.8 on the moment magnitude scale, it is the strongest in state history.[1][2] At 5.8 magnitude, this ties it with the 2011 Virginia earthquake, which was determined after it struck to be the most powerful quake in the eastern United States in the preceding 70 years.[3]
