The complexity of the problem and the amount of hidden neurons in a neural network are not the same thing. For example, convolutional layers are used to process image data, while recurrent layers are used for time series and audio data. There is no set upper or lower limit to the number of layers a neural network should have. In practice, the number of layers will be low, since most practical problems are not extremely complex. However, this limit is not applicable for advanced scientific research.
The layout of the network is chosen by the model designer. In this case, there are two hidden layers. The first one has the first two lines, while the second layer has the last two lines shared with the first. The result is represented in figure 9.
There are several guidelines for determining the optimal number of hidden layers. A multilayer perceptron neural network is one example. In this model, each hidden layer should have the same number of neurons as the output layer. Then, the hidden layer should be sized between the two layers. The first layer is called the input layer. It contains neurons that return values based on features. The second layer is called the hidden layer and it may have one or more hidden layers. Deep neural networks have more than three layers, which include the input and output. In this type of network, the number of hidden neurons is equal to or less than twice that of the input layer. For image recognition tasks, one layer is enough. For certain tasks, two layers may be helpful, but in general, a single layer is sufficient. However, it is important to understand that the number of hidden layers should not exceed two times the size of the input layer.
The number of neurons in a neural network is crucial to the quality of the output. Too few neurons in the hidden layer can result in underfitting and statistical bias. Too many neurons can cause overfitting and high variance. In addition, too many neurons can make the network work too slow. And too much training time can be harmful, as it makes the network more complicated to train. For most problems, one hidden layer should be sufficient.
The final layer, the output layer, plays a special role. It is responsible for classifying the input and applying the most likely label. Each node represents a label and turns on or off based on how strong the signal is from the previous layer. This is referred to as supervised learning. In this case, it is possible to train a neural network in as few as eight hours. For some tasks, as small as two percent, a single layer may be all that is required.
The structure of a neural network can be considered as its architecture. The various layers are used according to different tasks. They differ in importance based on their features. For example, convolutional layers are used in image processing while LSTM layers are used for NLP problems. The final layer, also known as the dense layer, changes the dimensionality of the output and helps define the relationship between the values.
