Do Ukraine have an Air force? This question has long been on the minds of military buffs. A recent report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) estimated that Ukraine had eighteen aircraft of all types, including twenty-four Sukhoi Su-24Ms. The air force also operates thirty-two MiG-29 FULCRUMs, equivalent to the US F-16, and a single regiment of Su-27 FLANKERs.
The origins of Ukrainian military aviation go back to autumn 1917, when the Ukrainian People’s Republic Air Fleet was founded. It was headed by Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Pavlenko, who had served in the Russian military during World War I and had been in charge of the Stavka. In 1918, the West Ukrainian People’s Republic created its own aviation corps along with the Galician Army. It was organized by Petro Franko, the son of renowned Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko. It was active until the 1920s.
In 1994, Ukraine’s Air Force was reorganized and consolidated. The UAF’s 5th Air Army became the 5th Air Corps and the 14th in the Carpathian MD was merged with the newly created 5th. The 5th was headquartered in Odessa and the former Kiev MD area. A long-range bomber division in Poltava continued to fly. In 2006, the Ukrainian Air Force faced a pilot shortage, and pilot recruitment was halted.
Ukraine received its first Su-27S interceptors and two-seat Su-27UB trainers from the USSR. The earliest of these MiG-29s was lost in a crash in Lviv in 2002, killing 77 people. This was the worst air show disaster in history. After the tragedy, Kiev decided to consolidate its Su-27s into a two-brigade structure.
Today, the Air force of Ukraine is comprised of more than a hundred aircraft. The military also consists of more than a thousand helicopters. Despite the small size of Ukraine, its aircraft arsenal is relatively modern. It has a tri-service structure, like most modern armies. This is a good thing, as it allows the air force to focus on the most vital mission. And it makes sense: a well-trained and equipped air force!

But this is a small price to pay to protect the country from an enemy fighter fleet.
